Austin Butler finally spoke out about what happened to him during a recent Bad Bunny concert, where he was caught dancing in “slow motion” in a video that went viral on social media.
The 33-year-old actor, who is a close friend of Benito (Bad Bunny’s real name), sat down with host Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show last Monday (12) to share what really happened that day.
“Someone gave me an edible right before the show, and I thought it was a good idea at the time,” the actor revealed, indicating that he had consumed a cannabis product before the singer’s performance in Puerto Rico.
“Then we found out we were in some sort of casita, a house that’s basically the second stage. [Bad Bunny] comes in and he’s on that stage at a certain point,” Butler recalled.
“The edible is kicking in. So, it’s like my brain is in two movies. One is like: ‘Benito and I had lunch earlier today. I’m just so proud of him.’”
“I see him and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, look how much you mean to everyone here.’ I’m falling in love with Puerto Rican culture and the dancing, and everyone is just so sexy and amazing,” he recounted.
Still chatting with Fallon, Butler explained that he was dancing timidly because he wanted to have fun, but didn’t want to draw attention away from his friend.
“The other part of me is thinking: ‘Don’t dance because you’ll distract from him. This is his moment.’ So I was like: ‘Hide.’ My body says ‘hide,’ but the music is so good, it’s in my bones at that moment,” he joked.
And it was this internal conflict that ended up shaping his strange moves. “I just ended up swaying my hips while crossing my arms. For some reason, every time I uncrossed my arms, I felt like I was drawing attention, so I thought: ‘It’s fine.’”
He then let his arms fall to his sides before adding: “It’s not fine.” Butler explained that he was worried about looking like a “sad guy” during the show, but “you also don’t want to be the guy who dances like crazy and steals the spotlight.”
